We participate in this course, organised by CRUE and the University Jaume I in Castellón, to reflect on science in public policy and the role of universities in this process.

The summer course ‘Science and Public Policy’, organised by the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE, by its Spanish initials) and the Universitat Jaume I (UJI), was held in Benicàssim on 5 and 6 June to reinforce the role of science in political decision-making.

The sessions brought together representatives from academia, institutions and parliament and provided a space for reflection on how to facilitate the transfer of scientific knowledge into public policies.

The first round table on Friday, devoted to “Science for democracy: possibilities and difficulties”, focused on the work at Oficina C.

The session had as participants Maite Iriondo de Hond, technician of scientific and technological evidence of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT); Cristina Fernández García, technician of connection with the scientific community and society of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT); Silvia Carrascal Domínguez, rector of the University San Jorge; and Miguel Ángel Castro Arroyo, rector of the University of Seville, and was moderated by Jesús Lancis Sáez, vice-rector of Research of the Universitat Jaume I.

The officers at Oficina C underlined the importance of having scientific information in Congress through the Reports C. They also detailed the connection activities, such as the pairing scheme, which aims to improve trust and mutual understanding between scientists and deputies.

This involvement allows for Oficina C to strengthen ties with the CRUE, which takes part in the Offices’ Advisory Committee.
